Test 4

Comp 2_4 from zatul on Vimeo.

I am very please with my current animation. So yeah. I really hope that my animation will attract the target audience as much possible.

test 3

test 3 from zatul on Vimeo.

  • I don't know if I should make some gap between 'Delicious' and 'Today's topic is..'
  • 'Too many wiring for 'There are many different kind of fruits..' maybe I shouldn't type all the writing but illustrate it so it will be more suitable for 3-5 years old children.
I have an idea where i will place all the fruits on the screen then the fruit will scale up whenever its name been called. I don't know how to explain this. For example..
'Apple' then fruit apple will scale up.

Test 2

Fruit test 2 from zatul on Vimeo.

Video above is my current stage of my animation.

  • the word 'topic' on its own sounds weird, so I might need to rerecord Adam voice says 'Today's topic is…'
  • Fruits running around with the blue background looks so wrong. Look less professional. Maybe I'll take that out.
  • Shall I add a '?' at 'Did you know that fruit is so yummy'?

Number one.

The next part of the animation is number 1, which is 'Fruit is so delicious'/'Fruit is so yummy'.
Additional point : 'For example pineapple, apple, rapes, pear, banana, cherry, watermelon, orange and strawberry'. I wanted to add  'Hmmmm yumm yumm'

I need Adam to say First, Second and Finally.

It is not 10.16am and Adam is late ! He is still not here

Fruit test 1

fruit test 1 from zatul on Vimeo.

This is my experimentation of the title of the animation. I am using Adam's voice and need him to say the word 'Subject'. I am still thinking if I should you the word 'topic' instead of 'subject' as the target audience is 3-5 years of age and I am so scared if I use complicated word.

For the background sound, I am using "Locally Sourced - Jason Farnham", I emailed him, asking if I can use his mdic for the background as this is a competition and will be submitted. He have not reply the email yet.

I booked the voice recording studio tomorrow to record more voice for the animation. For now, I am very please with the animation. Long live animation!

I want my title, 'DELICIOUS' to be jumping about and I am keen to learn new animation technique on AE. So I decided to go on YouTube to search 'After Effects text tutorial' and I came out with this.

Good and easy and I am not experimenting with this !

popsicle

Top left: sketches of my popsicles
Top right: an experimentation

I don't think my popsicle looks professional enough because it does not look like a popsicles. I am struggling with the colour of the shadow. I might need to get some contemporary 'popsicle illustraion'

Two images above are some image references that I think might be useful for my illustration. The shadow used is subtle white colour and I like how some popsicles have fruits in it which what i'm trying to illustrate.

Idiom 2 : 'Katak dibawah tempurung'

Idiom 2 : 'Katak dibawah tempurung' (like frog(s) underneath coconut shell)

Definition: 'Orang yang terhad ilmu pengetahuannya dan tidak tahu hal yang berlaku di sekelilingnya.' (A frog which leaves under a cocunut shell will think that the shell is the world.  So, one who is like the frog will have no knowledge of things/events/places outside his ‘world’.  He refuses to venture out into the world-he remains ignorant but is happy with it.) -webiste link

I had a table at Thought Bubble festival in November 2015. I think the brief was successful in terms of making money and boosting my confidence in selling my work but the process of making illustrations was unstatifactory. I enjoyed the festival and making money but I did not enjoy producing the artworks. I think for this studio brief my illustrations are so bland as they does not have any meaning - lack of concept. I also created fan art which I did not enjoy at all and probably will not create any fan art in the future. I also focused on illustrating heads too much because of lacking confidence in illustrating the body which. After this brief ended, I realised that I am good at brining concept to life. If I had a table at a  festival in the future, I would love to sell my own work instead of a mixture of fan art and my work. I would also love to sell a lot of prints instead of products such as hand bound sketchbooks and wooden badges. I hardly blogged this studio brief until May which was unprofessional; I found it was difficult to blog everything  afterwards as all the evelopment work happened in November which was six months ago.

Slowly building the background and never give up. This is why I want to do this brief as it allow me and forcing me to illustrate some depth in my illustration which I am not very good at it.

I can see that I am getting there. I just need to stop giving up and start playing around with the illustration's background

Researching background

I decided to go on YouTube to look at some aquarium video to observe how its background look like.
I might do my background silhouette.

Image above contain some sketches for the background. Let's do this thing !

Stuck with background.. still experimenting....

Compositions.

I came out with 4 different compositions but I think I will go with the bottom left. I think it is essential to make the shrimps big as the idioms is about shrimps behind stones/rocks anyway.

I want to put some corals so the scene not going to look so empty.  Corals are so beautiful and colourful and have different textures and shapes.

Image left : Reference images
right : my drawings.

I bought an a3 sketchbook just for studio brief 2. I just found that having a bigger sketchbook is better because it is big and I can draw as big as I wanted. I used to love a5 sketchbook but not anymore. Now I prefer A4 or A3. I wish I found about this sooner.

Idiom 1.

Idiom : Ada Udang Disebalik Batu (There are shrimps behind stones)
Meaning : Mempunyai maksud tersembunyi yang tidak ditampakkan (There is a secret meaning behind an act)

I start of drawing some shrimps. I do not know how to draw one. So below are my refetene images.

Slowly I build my confidence to draw prawn. I was not hard well it was hard at first but I managed to drew good prawns.

First 5 second

Fruit test from zatul fakharuldin on Vimeo.

I've done the first 5 seconds of the animation. Then I accidentally when back to the brief (click here for the brief's website), then I realised that, I need to make the title 'Delicious' but I've done 'Fruit' as my title. Perhaps, I can change it to 'Delicious : Fruit'.

I already book the voice record studio to record some voices saying 'fruit'. I am still not sure whose voice to use yet. I probably need around 4 people to say 'fruit' and another one main voice for the rest of the animation.

I need to look at a music that is suitable for this animation too.

I am so tempted to make the title jumping about and to make the yellow rectangle to a cloud shape.

Opening animation.

The title of this animation will be 'Fruits'. I will have a pattern of collage fruits at the beginning and the word 'Fruits' will appear.

Image bellows are collages that I created.

I love the colours = colourful = suitable with my target audience. I probably not going to use all of the fruits as some of them are not good enough.

Animation time !

Idea for my animation.

My idea for animation is to promote fruits to 3-5 years old. I pick fruit because I don't want to promote any other junk food for children as junk food are not good for them.

In my animation, I will promote:-
1. Fruit is delicious
2. Good for your body. They give you energy, vitamins, stronger and make you healthier.
3. Creates a lot of recipes such as fruit popsicles, fruit salad and juice.

Motion Graphic Research.

These three motion graphics are amazing and have opened my eyes to make my animation ever better than ever.

  • White or a light dull colour background will make the information on the animation stand out
  • Text coming out from the sides or top or bottom will make the animation more interesting and unique
  • 'Animation by', and 'music by' at the end of the animation
  • Pick the right music.
  • Add some texture will add more depth.
  • Changing the background by adding another solid layer from the side or top.

Proposed

These are some possible items that my illustrations can be printed on. For example t-shits, tote bags and greetings card.

I am considering on selling the greetings card on the end of year show art market in June.

List of Items

Images above are list of items that I am selling at the festival and on the very left corner are items that sold at the festival. I made £170 which is good and covered my table and my printing/material cost.

My table cost is £45.
Printing/materials : £25.90
Texi/bus: £10
Total : £80.90

£170 - £80.90 = £89.91

Profit : £89.91

Printing cost.

Early this week, I printed some print from the digital print room and it costed me £9 (Using their paper). After I had a long thought, I decided to use a similar type of paper that the library have which I believe that will reduce my printing cost.

£9 using their own paper
Christmas card : 4 A4
Cats : 4 A4
Cat fish : 4 A4

£10 using my own paper
(paper cost (20 A3 card) : £2.40) = 20p per A4 or 50p per A3

Fox : 2 A4
Spongebob : 2A4
Adventure time : 10A4
Spongebob : 6A4
Cat fishes :6 A4
Cat only : 6 A4

Cat postcard : 1 A3
Rain and Thank you For Everything : 3 A4
Spongebob postcard : 3 A4
Adventure time : 3 A4

Christmas Card : 4 A4

So yeah, brining my own paper for digital print is more cheaper.

The making of Squidward

I want to make a Squidward head for my 'Spongebob' theme pattern. I tried to illustrate the head but it look wrong. So I might find another drawing of him on my sketchbook. I am so tempted to watch Back to The Future 2, but I need to finish off the head first !
From the original sketch, Squidward is smiling, but after having a feedback from a peers, I changed its expression to 'unhappy' as Squidward is always unhappy.

My peers suggested me that ' If you want to do an artwork for a tv show, you need to learn about characters' personality'.

Lazer cutter

Image above are some sketched then I drew then in Ai. The size of the brooch that I am wanting to create is approximately 5x5cm as that is the size that get after measured some of my button batch. I think 5x5cm is not too big and it is not too small.

I wanted some part of the fox head to be raster, but of course at this time I know nothing about laser cutter. But I think this is a good start. Now I need to think about packaging. Hmm.

Lazer cutter.

I went to the wood workshop, the technician said that

I need to induct myself to use the facility. I need to book it at my administrator which is Tom. The lady that specialise on laser cutter in on holiday so he does not know much about laser cutter.

I might go to Vernon Street to use the laser cutter as the technician over there know me more and I am more aware of the system (the technician do the laser cutter for me instead of me do the laser cutter by myself, but I already book an induction which I probably going to end up do the laser cutter in Blenheim walk. For now, let's go to Vernon Street.

Simon, the technician in vernon street said that to use the laser cutter is free and only pay for the wood. If i bring my own material then I do not need to pay anything.

Booked my laser cutter induction at Blenheim walk on Wednesday the 11 November 2015, 1 PM

Wooden Brooch

So I went to google image and I found this. Wooden brooch was not originally that I want to do but I think it will be interesting for me to experiment with laser cutter and wood. Okay now, I need to :-
1. Go to wood workshop and ask few questions. These are questions that I need to ask the technician:-

How think is the wood and how much ?
Do I need to pay for using the facilities, if so how much?
If I want to paint the wood, is there any specific type of paint ? How do I 'finish' the wood?

2. Design some other stuff on Ai so I can laser cut them.
3. I already have the pin (to stick behind the wood) at home.
