One of my hobbies and interests is sewing. I like to sew especially sewing my own clothes. So I decided to apply within my illustration (to represent hair) and I like the texture that the thread created after I had sown and painted over it using a watercolour paint mixed with water. If I have more time I will experiment with paint and sewing in more depth.

To create this illustrations I have used water colour paint then mixed it with water using a brush, I then applied to a piece of paper. - using a reference image, I drew these buffalo   ( Indian hunt buffalo). For details I have used biro pen and a fine liner. However, I prefer biro pen as its colour is similar to the paint.
Ink (1)
Acrylic Paint (2)

These are two successful experiments.
I have used ink for the 1 and acrylic paint with brush for the 2.

I really like the effect that ink has created - liquid and freedom?. I did the eyes, the nose and the mouth using continuous line drawing technique as I found it would difficult to draw each one of the lines using ink. But hey, it did turn out well !

I like how arcylic paint created some kind of texture which reminds me of wood and I added glasses to my Native Indian woman. - I used contrasting colours as well.

Line

My theme is Cowboy and Indian but I decide to focus on Indian.

I have started my line drawing using a fine-liner. I like my middle illustration using a continuous line drawing and I decided to do some further experimentation with it. I like it because it looks unique.

Shape

Shape used in a commercial context e.g. logo

For example the image above, I created it using the pen tool on Illustrator.  Well there are a lot more techniques for creating shapes e.g. collage, fabric and cutting paper.

Line - Tone, mark & pattern

  1. Pressure can be altered within stroke
  2. If it is rubbish, draw it again > Yes Zatul, never give up please and have some confidence.
  3. Tone and mark pattern can create 3D drawings.

This is an illustration by Clifford Harper. Harper has used different direction of line to create different light shading effect. - good idea.

Line.

'The unique craft of its maker, the context it exists within and how it communicates its message' - makes me realise that good illustration does not always 'good'

Drawing is a basic human talent so have some confidence Zatul ! !

Type of line drawing :

  • recognisable
  • minimal
  • abstract
  • observational
  • and more
Things to remember : Look beyond the illustration section. Visit the photography, fashion, environmental and general interest shelves.

Drawing From Reference

'When we talk about drawing from reference, we are talking about having some source of visual information to inform your drawing'

For example if i want to draw the Eiffel tower, I need to look at its photograph because I can't remember  exactly what it looks like on top of my head.

'Illustrators and artists have always collected visual information that informs their own practice'

Well, I did collect some materials that I think might be useful for me e.g. a straw, leaves and a sponge. Visual information does not have to be only illustration, it could be a photograph, favourite artist and interest.

OUIL404 - Sketchbook.

''Draw a thing badly. Draw it again. Look back at old drawings. Repeat. Draw quickly. Draw slowly, Explore new tools, master old ones. Draw the view from your window. Draw from found photos. Draw faces from imagination. Drawing should be like breathing. NEVER STOP''

This quote is like a step by step how to become a great drawer as I think it is an important main skill for an illustrator.

I need to remember to make use of a sketchbook. Normal people use diary for writing; but we, art people use diary to visualise our emotions. YEAH !
